The magickal properties & history of hag stones

Hag Stones have a long and ancient history based heavily in old Celtic Folklore. They had endless uses, primarily focused on protection. They were worn or kept on your person, placed inside the walls of homes and chimneys, placed in barns, hung in windows, and even kept on ships.

First off, what is a Hag Stone? Hag Stones are rocks, pebbles, and stones that have a hole naturally carved through them from the constant pounding and washing of rivers and oceans tides over long periods of time. Because of this, finding Hag Stones is considered a fairly rare occurrence, which makes them good luck charms.

Similar to the Evil/ All Seeing Eye, Hag Stones were believed to protect one from dark and evil magics. This was based on the belief that negative energy was too big to pass through the hole of the Hag Stone, leaving only enough room for positivity, good luck, and good fortune to pass through. This belief also goes hand-in-hand with the folklore that dark magic can not work in the presence of water. Because Hag Stones were created in water, they are believed to still carry that Water Element Energy.

Hag Stone uses don’t just stop at protection, they could also be used:

  • To guard against nightmares

  • Peer into the Fairie Realm ( although, perhaps only on a full moon ;) )

  • Use in divination to help connect to your ancestors and Guides

  • Astral Travel

  • Help healing emotional wounds and to assist in Shadow Work

  • Assistance with fertility

  • Good Luck

and so, so much more! Their uses and applications are endless. Whether you choose to wear them as jewelry, decorations around your home or altar, in your car, or for spiritual work/divination, Hag Stones are a powerful aid in all magickal practices.

Blessed Be,
